Reflect. Respond.

Welcome.

Sacred Insight is a collective experiment in slowing down—using contemplative photography — a practice of attentive seeing — to find the Sacred in everyday life.

Many of us move through our days quickly — working, planning, responding, solving problems. Yet in the middle of ordinary life there are moments that we pass by unnoticed, that quietly invite us to slow down and look again: a landscape that stops us in our tracks, a conversation that opens something deeper, a question that lingers long after it was asked.

Sacred Insight grows out of a simple belief:

The sacred is not separate from everyday life. It is woven through it, in all persons, places and things.

Photography, reflection, and conversation can help us notice that more clearly and respond to it more deeply.

Here you will find several different kinds of content, each offering a different doorway into reflection and response:

Visual Reflections

Photography has a unique ability to slow us down. An image can hold a moment long enough for us to see what we would otherwise miss. These weekly visual reflections pair photographs with short contemplative thoughts — invitations to pause and notice, to receive, reflect, and respond.

Conversations

Periodically we will host conversations — podcasts (audio and video), interviews, guided meditations or essays — exploring spirituality, creativity, meaning, and the ways our experiences shape how we recognize the sacred in everything around us.

Community

Linked to the weekly visual reflections, our subscribers-only “Community Prompts” offer questions, themes or images meant to invite discussion and shared perspective. You are welcome to participate at your own pace however you wish: to read quietly, join the conversation with your comments, or submit your own images for the community’s contemplation.

A Simple Rhythm

New content will generally appear weekly. The goal is not volume. The goal is space for thoughtful reflection.

The Three Movements of Our Practice

To help us stay grounded, we approach every podcast, essay and image through three movements:

Receive: Shifting from “taking” a photo to “receiving” a gift.

Reflect: Listening to the internal echoes of that gift.

Respond: Turning our reflection into community connection and outward action.

If You Are New Here

A simple place to begin is with a Visual Reflection. These are short, contemplative, and designed to open a moment of pause.

Or simply explore whatever catches your curiosity.

However you arrive here, you are welcome. Come and see.

Thanks for reading Sacred Insight! Canon Chris McCloud

In this compelling episode, the Good News team Lynn Shematek and Deacons Jon Shematek and Lauren Welch welcome the Revered Chris McCloud, Canon to the Ordinary, for a candid and heartfelt discussion about the ongoing work of reparations and reconciliation within the Episcopal Diocese of Maryland. Chris shares her personal journey through nearly two decades of ordained ministry, revealing the twists, challenges, and deep sense of calling that led her to champion reparations as a gospel mandate.

The conversation delves into the real, tangible impact of reparations—how small grants are helping to restore dignity, opportunity, and hope to communities that have been fractured by injustice. Chris recounts stories of youth reclaiming lost traditions, families finding shelter and unity, and the transformative power of programs like the Sutton Scholars. She emphasizes that reparations are not about charity, but about justice—about repairing what has been broken and creating space for all to flourish.

Throughout the episode, the seriousness and urgency of this work are clear. Chris calls on listeners to recognize the brokenness around us and to respond not with pity, but with action rooted in faith and love. The invitation is open: whether through direct involvement, financial support, or simply spreading awareness, everyone has a role to play in building a more just and hopeful future.

This episode is both a testament to the hard work being done and a rallying cry for others to join in.
